Fried puter system

Well, I've done it now :-/

My one year old system fried itself yesterday while playing Dragon Age. I got a Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD). But it happened so fast that I didn't see what the error was.

Long story short, the dam thing won't boot up anymore, and doesn't want to re-install WinXP. Seems like the mobo, memory & hard drive are toast.

I'm on my backup puter right now, but its slow playing any game, even GW. Hopefully I'll be back by Wednesday. I'm not going to cheap out on computer parts this time.

Hope to get Duncan HM before end of year! :-D

Sorry to hear that Pale

From my experience that sounds like a hard drive failure - what leads you to conclude the mb and RAM are bad too?

If you didn't already, grab the bootable CD image ISO of MemTest86+ from here and use it to check:

http://www.memtest.org/#downiso

If your computer can pass 24 hours solid of that, the RAM is fine at least, and quite possibly the motherboard too.

oh,that's not a good news , Pale .
Unless you've planned to get a new machine for New Year.
No warranty for that one , I presume ?

Or better yet, do what Thal would do!

Which would be to of course beat an officer over the head and steal the money for a new puter while they're not looking. Or extorting the money from new Scouts.

Both fine choice, whichever floats your boat. ;-)

I kinda had the same problem. But I went poking around in the system and now it won't boot up at all, get the "Windows didn't start right last time, choose one of these options to try and start it up" screen. Selecting any of those just brings it back to that screen again. Knew I shouldn't have messed with it after all these years. :sealed:

Oh well, just means if I can't get it back up I'll be getting a new one sooner than I thought, which might not be a bad deal. :-D

Well I did get my system up and running just in time for the Wintersday festival 8-)

Apparently, not only was my old 4GB of memory shot, but the NEW 4GB of memory was bad right out of the box! That was why I thought maybe the mobo had bit the dust. The new OCZ memory (both sticks) had many errors on it. I was lucky that the computer shop that help me diagnose the system had some "free" memory on hand. I tell you, 2x256 (512MB) of RAM is barely enough to do anything except load WinXP back into the system. This memory screw up really ruined my Xmas holiday plans. Oh well, guess we'll have to plan to get Duncan in the near future.

I am taking the new memory back to the store tomorrow to hopefully get some new sticks. As for the old memory, its still under warranty (less than a year old). I hope OCZ will RMA it, and give me replacement RAM that isn't borked :-P

Well I picked up my replacement memory yesterday and at least the memory has passed the Memtest86+ tests. It was great to finally get it up to speed :-D

Well I still have to e-mail OCZ and see if they will RMA the other 4GB that got toasted. Hope to actually play GW on Sunday :bigwave:
